Artist's Statement

The way in which I work is based on intuition and drawing. Throughout my art career I have sketched and drawn profusely, filling lots of sketchbooks and hundreds of bits of paper.

I draw quite spontaneously allowing imagery to emerge with little conscious interference. They are of intricate patterns and archetypal symbols relating to themes such as the family, fertility, reproduction and the four elements. There are also lots of images of nature and especially trees and leaves.

The drawings are complex, delicate and sensitive. I have photocopied a lot of them onto acetate and have them attached to the wall in my studio for reference. When composing a picture I will intuitively arrange the acetates on the paper first, often enlarging, shrinking or cut and pasting them until I get a composition that seems right.

They touch on an 'otherness' I feel in life, a sense of the beyond, of spirit in man and nature.
